The Netflix series, based on the streaming’s mega-hit Korean survival drama Squid Game, saw 456 contestants compete for a massive $4.56 million prize through a series of challenges. These ranged from the infamous “Red Light Green Light” from the 2021 drama, in which contestants had to avoid moving while in the eyeline of a horrifying giant doll, to new ones based on children’s games such as Battleship. He received his doctorate in dramaturgy and dramatic criticism from the Yale School of Drama. “Illinoise” becomes a road trip, as Henry ventures to Chicago and then to New York, testing himself in big-city landscapes that are incorporated in Rigg’s scenic design. The visual picture, sharply enhanced by the lighting of Brandon Stirling Baker and the costumes of Reid Bartelme and Harriet Jung, suggests the sentimental education of wandering artists searching to reassemble the losses and gains that are inextricably part of maturity. The Olivier Award-winning revival of “Cabaret,” starring a physically precise and theatrically audacious Eddie Redmayne, comes to Broadway but misses his London co-star, Jesse Buckley.

Where is A Doll’s House playing?

But for every Stephen Sondheim masterpiece there’s a barrage of jukebox and movie musicals eager to cash in on the forgiving nostalgia of theatergoers. In the case of “Mary Jane,” the 3-year-old Alex, whom we never see, has cerebral palsy and other complications, and is cared for by his divorced mother, Mary Jane, played by McAdams. Alex’s father, also not seen, left the marriage sometime after the child’s birth, and Mary Jane is now surrounded by a diverse community of people, none of whom happen to be male. Herzog never directly addresses the lack of men in Mary Jane’s current life, and her silence on the subject tells us much about how different mothers and fathers can be. His production may not be the only or most successful musical interpretation of Fitzgerald’s handiwork headed to Broadway.

He berates Nora, calling her a dishonest and immoral woman and telling her that she is unfit to raise their children. He says that from now on their marriage will be only a matter of appearances. Kristine tells Krogstad that she only married her husband because she had no other means to support her sick mother and young siblings and that she has returned to offer him her love again. She believes that he would not have stooped to unethical behavior if he had not been devastated by her abandonment and in dire financial straits.

His collaborative score with Ryuichi Sakamoto for Alejandro González Iñárritu’s ‘The Revenant’ was nominated for a Golden Globe, BAFTA, Grammy, and Critics Choice Award. A Doll's House, starring Academy Award winner Jessica Chastain as 'Nora Helmer' in Lloyd's radical new production of Henrik Ibsen's landmark drama in a new version by Amy Herzog, plays its final performance at the Hudson Theatre. Up until the end of the play, the fact that it could be 1879 up on that stage or 2023 is not in the least bothersome — in fact, it’s thrilling.

To be considered, production must have opened between April 29, 2022, and April 27, 2023. Best musical revival will be a competition between “Parade,” “Sweeney Todd,” and “Into the Woods,” as well as Lincoln Center’s revival of “Camelot,” which has met significant critical headwinds since its opening. “There are times I go out there and I’m like, trying to hold it together. Coming from the actor who has played televangelist Tammy Faye Bakker and country singer Tammy Wynette, that’s saying a lot. Krogstad notes, correctly, that Nora has been spoiled her whole life, but her own Faustian bargain to manage the torpor of living with Torvald crashes into a reality that is fast becoming impossible to manage and even more difficult to bear.

Henrik Ibsen's A Doll's House, now revived with Oscar winner Jessica Chastain, opens on Broadway March 9 at the Hudson Theatre. The revival has already announced an extension through June 10, after previously being scheduled to complete its run June 4. The 2023 spring revival of the Ibsen classic features a new translation by Amy Herzog and direction by Jamie Lloyd. For Nora, this is an important first step towards awakening and enlightenment, and in 1879, it must have been as thrilling as it was scandalous. For the rest of the women in the audience, though, one hopes we’re a little farther along.

Chastain recently wrapped production on the psychological thriller Mothers’ Instinct, in which she stars opposite Anne Hathaway and on the Michel Franco directed, Memory, opposite Peter Sarsgaard. In this video, watch as Tony nominee Arian Moayed chats more about audiences' reactions to A Doll's House, why this company is so important to him, and so much more. In the play, Nora leaves Torvald with head held high, though facing an uncertain future given the limitations single women faced in the society of the time. Whether facing the audience, the back wall or anywhere in between, every position suggests something larger about each character’s relation to the others. Only once, late in the play, do Nora and Torvald sit side by side, their physical closeness reflecting a breakthrough in candor if not romance. Chastain plays Nora Helmer in the Jamie Lloyd-directed production of the play—about a housewife who makes the then-earth-shattering decision to leave her husband and family behind. A Doll’s House hasn't received quite as many film adaptations as stage productions, but there's still a great many movie versions. Such a storied play is bound to attract many celebrated actors, and it has.

Marriage, motherhood, money problems, friendship, familial secrets, even white-collar crime — these are revealed to be timeless, universal experiences. But what comes across as a little less than cathartic, in 2023, is Nora’s final realization that she must break free from everything she’s known to go find herself. It’s done as a moment of liberation — a call by a woman, for all women — to stop orbiting and find a new path, free from the constraints of old ideas. In this production, Nora hardly stands, though the other characters move freely across the stage. Seated in her chair like a silent doll, she sometimes orbits the space, which is an apt metaphor for a woman who has never, ever, imagined breaking free from the gravitational pull of her husband, the expectations of marriage, the limits of society. Turns out that, like most women of her time (if, in fact, we’re still in the 19th century), Nora’s ideas have been formed by others — in particular, controlling men — starting with her father when she was a child.

After Torvald literally drags Nora home from the party, Rank follows them. They chat for a while, with Dr. Rank conveying obliquely to Nora that this is a final goodbye, as he has determined that his death is near. As he reads them, Nora prepares to run away for good, but Torvald confronts her with Krogstad's letter. Enraged, he declares that she is now completely in Krogstad's power; she must yield to Krogstad's demands and keep quiet about the whole affair.

Is a Grammy Award-winning stage, film, and television actor known for his acclaimed performances on Broadway including originating the roles of 'Hercules Mulligan' and 'James Madison' in Lin-Manuel Miranda's Tony Award-winning production, Hamilton. Since making his Broadway debut in 2012, Onaodowan has also starred in productions of both Cyrano de Bergerac and Rocky. He was most recently seen playing the lead role of 'Pierre' in Natasha, Pierre & the Great Comet of 1812. His Off-Broadway work includes Hamilton at the Public, Luce, Neighbors, and Young Jean Lee's The Shipment as well as the first national tour of American Idiot. A Doll's House thrust drama firmly into the modern age when it premiered in 1879.
